How Your Shopping Trolley Can Help Save The Ocean

Monday, 30 Jun, 2025

Have you ever considered that your regular grocery shop could help protect the ocean? It may seem surprising, but the decisions we make as consumers, from the food we buy to the packaging it comes in, have a direct impact on the health of our ocean!

By choosing wisely and reducing our reliance on plastic packaging, each one of us can contribute to a cleaner ocean and safe marine life.

The Problem with Packaging

Packaging is one of the biggest contributors to plastic waste globally. According to Our World in Data, packaging accounts for approximately 40% of the world’s plastic waste. In Australia, each person generates an estimated 60 kilograms of plastic waste per year, much of it from packaged food and household products.

While progress is being made with bans on single-use plastics in various states and territories across Australia, plastic pollution continues to threaten marine life. Stronger action is needed, and while ultimate responsibility lies with the corporations creating this problem, consumer choices play a vital role in driving that change.

What You Can Do

We know that avoiding plastic completely can be difficult, but the good news is that making a difference starts with simple, everyday actions.

1. Refuse Plastic Packaging
Where possible, avoid buying items that come wrapped in plastic. Choose loose fruit and vegetables instead of pre-packaged options. Not only does this reduce waste, but it also gives you control over the quantity and quality of your food.

2. Bring Your Own Bags and Containers
Reusable shopping bags, produce bags, and containers are essential tools for reducing plastic waste. Keep them in your car, backpack, or handbag so they’re always on hand when you need them.

3. Plan Ahead
Before heading to the shops, consider whether there are plastic-free alternatives available. Make a shopping list and identify where you can reduce your reliance on plastic packaging.

4. Support Local and Low-Waste Retailers
Shopping at farmers markets and bulk food stores often means less packaging and more sustainable practices. Look for environmentally responsible brands and businesses that prioritise low-waste packaging and ethical sourcing.

Make a Bigger Impact

Beyond reducing personal consumption, you can get involved in local efforts to tackle plastic pollution. Sea Shepherd’s Marine Debris Campaign runs regular community clean-ups to remove waste from coastlines and prevent it from reaching the ocean. These events also help collect important data that supports environmental advocacy and policy development. To find an upcoming clean-up near you, visit our events page.

Take Action on a Global Scale

Plastic pollution is a global issue that requires coordinated international action. That’s why Sea Shepherd is supporting the call for a strong Global Plastics Treaty - a legally binding agreement that would address plastic pollution at its source. You can help by signing the petition and urging the Australian Government to support strong measures during the treaty negotiations. Every voice adds pressure and brings us closer to systemic change.

Each decision brings us closer to a healthier ocean for the future generations. It all starts with you!
