Support Our Mission to Save the Octopus
Thursday, 25 Sep, 2025
Since 2022, Sea Shepherd crews have been removing illegal octopus traps from the Mediterranean Sea, a victory only possible because of the ongoing generosity of Sea Shepherd's dedicated supporters.
Starting in July this year, our ship Sea Eagle began a 75-day mission in Greek waters. Already, the results are staggering:
- Almost 35,000 illegal traps removed
- 288,294 metres of deadly line cleared from the sea
- 1,584 octopuses released back to freedom
Octopus trapping is banned in Greece during breeding season from July to September, so every trap we found up to now is breaking the law and threatening the survival of this remarkable animal.
Every day we are not out at sea, more octopuses die, many of them females carrying thousands of unborn eggs.
We need your help today. Your regular gift, even $20 every four weeks, will keep us on the frontlines - removing illegal traps from the sea floor and giving octopuses a chance to thrive again.
“Our octopus campaigns are some of the most rewarding direct action efforts I’ve ever witnessed. Since launching in the Tuscan Reserve, Italy, in 2022, the campaign has made a tremendous impact on the recovery of octopus populations”
Sea Shepherd Global CEO, Captain Alex Cornelissen
In the first days of this year’s campaign, the crew was stunned by what they found: vast numbers of traps scattered across the sea floor, marked by buoys stretching as far as the eye could see. For 10 straight hours they worked tirelessly, pulling in trap after trap, dismantling them, and freeing trapped wildlife.
The scale of this crisis is staggering, and our mission has never been more urgent. But with the passion of supporters and octopus lovers worldwide, we’re confident we can replicate our success in Italy again in Greece.
We will not stop until every illegal trap is removed, and octopus populations are thriving once again throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
Your regular support keeps our ships at sea and our crew on deck, doing the gritty, backbreaking work of hauling illegal traps by hand, carefully inspecting each for trapped marine life, and clearing deadly gear from the most overfished sea in the world.
DONATE NOW AND BE PART OF THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE MEDITERRANEAN'S OCTOPUSES
These incredibly complex, intelligent, and sentient beings do not belong in traps.
This campaign is vital to the survival of octopuses in the Mediterranean, protecting them is also critical to preserving the delicate balance of the entire marine ecosystem they belong to. When our ship comes into port at night, the decks are covered in bags full of illegal fishing gear, the crew is tired but satisfied from yet another day of highly impactful direct action, and hundreds of octopus can continue to live free and full lives.
But we need your ongoing support to be able to continue the octopus campaign in the future. We are committed to being on the sea, every breeding season, until illegal trapping stops forever.
If we don’t act now, thousands more octopuses will die needlessly - your support today ensures we can keep pulling every last trap from the sea.
