Sea Shepherd Day For The Ocean 2025

Thursday, 08 May, 2025

Outstanding efforts from passionate Sea Shepherd Australia volunteers and communities made this year's Day for the Ocean another incredible success!

United – For the Ocean!

Last Sunday, more than 220 Australians geared up with gloves and collection bags, heading out to protect, defend, and conserve the ocean. Eleven events were hosted across the country, and together we removed 473 kg of trash. Our dedicated volunteers sorted and counted over 42,800 pieces of debris - preventing them from harming local habitats or entering the ocean!

The top offenders were cigarette butts, single-use plastic food packaging, and plastic remnants - highlighting the urgent need to eradicate single-use plastics and increase pressure for a strong Global Plastics Treaty

Each event also featured Sea Shepherd stalls with activities like face painting, vegan bake sales, and plenty of merchandise - all sparking important conversations about marine conservation and bringing families, friends, and strangers together for a shared cause.

“It was so good to see many returning faces at our Day for the Ocean events, as well as new community members! So many smiles and so much positive energy for the ocean were felt all around the nation. I’d like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who joined and takes steps to protect the ocean and its marine life!”

— K. Strittmatter, Marine Debris Campaign Coordinator

The passion and dedication of our volunteers and community members are a true inspiration. This event was a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we unite for a better future.

A massive thank you - from the bottom of the ocean - to everyone who was a part of this special day. Together, we are conserving, protecting, and defending the world’s ocean!
