Australians Want a Strong Global Plastics Treaty

Wednesday, 07 May, 2025

Urge the Australian Government to Push for a Strong Global Plastics Treaty!

Our ocean is drowning in plastic waste, beaches are covered in trash, and our local habitats and marine life are at stake. We urgently need a strong Global Plastics Treaty!

Every minute, over 250 kilograms of plastic leak into Australia’s environment. In some of the most polluted areas of our coastline, there are up to 40,000 pieces of plastic per square kilometre.

Since 2015, Sea Shepherd’s Marine Debris Campaign has been fighting plastic pollution across Australia — hosting community clean-ups and removing marine plastics from even the most remote beaches. But we know that cleaning up is just a band-aid. To truly protect the ocean, we need to stop plastic at its source.

Now, the world has a unique opportunity to end plastic pollution globally. Countries are negotiating a Global Plastics Treaty that could establish binding laws to address the plastic crisis. But this treaty is at risk of failing.

More than 99% of plastics are made from fossil fuels. Some oil-producing countries and plastic industry lobbyists are stalling negotiations, prioritising profit over planet.

The Australian Government has taken a strong stance so far. We need them to push onwards — to stand firm, lead with courage, and demand a truly strong and binding Global Plastics Treaty.

Sign your name here and urge the Australian Government to stand firm and negotiate a Strong Global Plastics Treaty.
