In 2021, our direct-action campaigns made headlines around the world. Read a selection of the published articles below and discover why this is important in our mission to defend, conserve and protect marine life. 

Media is without a doubt one of the most impactful ways to bring about change. In the words of Sea Shepherd's Founder, Captain Paul Watson, “the most powerful weapon in the world, as far as I’m concerned, is the camera.”

If people do not know about the plight of the ocean, they cannot act. So, here is a small selection of great stories featuring our work on the frontlines of marine conservation in 2021. 

January 2021 - The Guardian

In 2021, Sea Shepherd’s work to combat illegal fishing was featured in the gripping new BBC series ‘A Perfect Planet’ narrated by Sir David Attenborough. This article in The Guardian takes a look behind-the-scenes.

April 2021 - ABC Landline

This segment in the ABC series Landline explores the Western Australian Government's proposal for a scientific trial to allow existing commercial line fishers to retain sharks taken as a by-product. 

“With sharks depleted by up to 70% globally, every remaining shark in our oceans is precious” - Sea Shepherd Australia’s Managing Director Jeff Hansen.

June 2021 - Vogue

To celebrate World Oceans Day, the fashion and lifestyle publication Vogue profiled three of Sea Shepherd’s female campaigners who are working to defend, conserve and protect marine life. 

June 2021 - The Guardian

Read about our record-breaking chase  from Antarctica to Africa of the notorious illegal fishing vessel, the F/V Thunder that features in the documentary Chasing the Thunder. 

August 2021 - Yahoo News

On Australia’s East Coast, migrating whales are made victims to government-run shark culling programs that indiscriminately catch marine life. 

In August, our Apex Harmony Campaign spoke out for the protection of whales when a juvenile whale became entangled in a shark net at the Gold Coast, spending two days fighting for its life. 

September 2021 - The Guardian

This article, featuring our campaign Operation Bloody Fjords, exposes the cruel and unnecessary massacre of a superpod of nearly 1,500 dolphins in the Faroe Islands. This was the largest single killing of dolphins or pilot whales in the islands’ history. 

September 2021 - The Washington Post

News of the killing of almost 1,500 dolphins in the Faroe Islands sent shockwaves around the world. This article by The Washington Post documents the pressure from the international community for the Faroe Islands to end this cruel and outdated practice.

September 2021 - Associated Press

The Associated Press with Spanish-language broadcaster Univision accompanied our vessel, the M/V Ocean Warrior, on an 18-day voyage to observe up close for the first time the Chinese distant water fishing fleet on the high seas off South America.

December 2021 - The West Australian

Read this opinion piece by Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Ben Morton, about the issue of marine plastic pollution that features our Marine Debris Campaign.
